How to Pick The Perfect Window Treatment to Add “Detail” to Your Design

Have you looked around your space lately and decided it was missing something?

Well, you just might be missing one little “detail” - Window Treatments!

How do window treatments add to your design?

If your room is lacking something, ask yourself if window treatments would add any of these 4 elements:

  1. Function

  2. Insulation

  3. Texture

  4. Pattern

If the answer is yes to any of these, then you may want to consider incorporating the perfect window treatment to complete your space. Window treatments can be the solution for all of these symptoms. So let’s find out how!

How to make the perfect impact?

Custom window treatments are one of the services we offer and guess what? We love to do them!

At Catherine Marrano Interiors we believe that window treatments really elevate a space and define a window and that’s why we want you to know some of the secrets of the pros so you can determine the right solution for your interior.

You may have beautiful windows and don’t want to cover them, but if you have lots of other elements in the space and still feel like there is something missing, window treatments could be the answer.

Why do you say? Well, because every room needs balance. If something is missing, window treatments could add balance to your space.

How can window treatments add balance?

5 reasons you may need window treatments to add balance to your interior:

  1. Maybe you have a room full of soft home furnishings like upholstery and rugs?  By adding the right solution you can break up and balance the other textures, patterns or solids you have in your room with window treatments. Textured shading systems and wood shutters are a favorite for this problem!

  2. Your room is full of cabinets and bookcases?   Adding fabric can soften the hard lines of cabinets, furniture and other permanent structures and hard surfaces.

  3. Is your room missing pop, pattern or texture?   Bring on the pattern, texture and pizzazz with a new element on the windows!

  4. Do you need privacy?   Sometimes you just don’t want everyone in your business! OK, you never want everyone knowing your business. So get some drapes or a shade on that window before the whole town’s a talk’in! Lining and Black-out are great solutions depending on what type of privacy is desired.

  5. Is the light of the room disrupting the function of your space? Maybe you need options to block or diffuse light?  No one likes it when there’s a glare on that TV or in their face while watching it! Maybe you need complete darkness when sleeping? Help, window treatment! Block that light when needed and enjoy that sun the other times of the day.

By adding the right window treatment solution you can solve any of these 5 issues.

What do most people do not consider when it comes to window treatments?

They don’t realize that they can insulate a non-efficient window. I have an old home with leaded glass windows as do many of my client’s homes. They are beautiful, but they are not the most practical.

Instead of replacing the windows, which I would not want to do because they are original to the house and add an architectural element to every room that can not be replaced. Instead, I like to use the right application of window treatments to insulate. You can do this by adding an extra layer with flannel or inner lining. The extra lining not only reduces air passing through, but it also gives drapery weight and insulation. So you get two for one, blocking out the cold air in the winter and also making the drapes look more lush and full.

Window treatments come in many forms and can not only soften, but they also bring texture, pattern and insulation to your space. I personally feel that not only does drapery solve all of the solutions above, but it adds ”eyebrows” to a room. No one wants a face without eyebrows.

Here are 4 more Insider tips regarding fears about window treatments:

Are you afraid of your drapery making your window appear too heavy?

Opt for lighter weight fabrics like linen and cotton and stay away from heavier fabrics such as chenille or velvet. Selecting lighter colors or sheers can also keep you out of arms way.

You want to draw the eye up and make the room feel taller?

Always take your rod or treatment either to the top of the ceiling or at minimum 12” above the window. This can fool the eye and make your windows look taller but it also prevents you from cutting off the room or making your space look squatty.

Do you want to keep a neutral feel but add softness and eyebrows to your windows?

Try textures instead of pattern or add a tone on tone geometric pattern, sheer or solid. Other applications like bamboo, honeycomb shades or silhouettes could do the job.

Do you need privacy, but want the window view most of the time?

Go for drapery on a traverse rod that functions to move drapery out of the way when you don’t use it or opt for a roman shade to the ceiling that will pull off the window when all the way up. Maybe a top down bottom up shade is the answer? A combination of a soft treatment with wood blinds or shutters could be the way to go!

Yes, there are certain situations where window treatments aren’t necessary or might not be a good application, but I find that more often than not, they wake up a space! They can draw the eye up by making a room feel taller. They can add pattern, texture and even function by blocking out light or giving privacy.

Maybe you have had a bad experience or are still unsure about window treatments. Window treatments can be a big investment so I do recommend that you hire a professional.
